The Three Types of Traffic according to Russell Brunson
In "Dot Com Secrets, Russell Brunson explains that there are only three types of traffic essential to any online business:
- Traffic you control
- Traffic you do not control
- Traffic you own
Let's explore each of these types of traffic and how they can help you grow your online business.
Traffic You Control
The traffic you control refers to any type of paid traffic. This includes:
- Email advertisements (individual ads, banners, links, mentions)
- Pay-per-click ads (Facebook, Instagram, Google, TikTok, etc.)
- Banner ads
- Native or traditional ads
- Affiliates
The main challenge with this type of traffic is that every time you need more, you have to spend more money. So the goal should always be to send any traffic you control to a website that we call a "squeeze page".
A squeeze page (landing page) is a very simple page with a single goal: to convert the traffic you control into traffic you own. This is accomplished by capturing the visitor's contact information, usually their email address, so you can start sending them communications directly.
When you convert the traffic you control into traffic you own, you can begin to guide your new leads through your "TV series" sequences and "Seinfeld, Friends or The Big Bang Theory" style diary emails, topics we will explore in Secrets #7 and #8.
Traffic You Don't Control
Traffic you don't control includes:
- Social media (Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc.)
- Search traffic (Search Engine Optimization or SEO)
- Guest blog traffic
- YouTube
- Interviews with guests
Your ONLY goal with traffic you don't control is to convert it into traffic you own. To accomplish this, try to drive all traffic you don't control back to your blog or squeeze page. If you visit any of Russell Brunson's blogs, you'll notice that the top of his blog is practically a glorified squeeze page. When people visit his blog, the main thing they can do is provide their email address.
Traffic You Own
The traffic you have is the most valuable because you can communicate directly with these potential customers at no additional cost. Russell Brunson discovered this truth early on:
The first month, he got about two hundred people to join his list and earned a little over two hundred dollars. When his list grew to a thousand people, he started earning a thousand dollars a month. And when he reached a list of ten thousand people, his monthly income rose to over ten thousand dollars. These numbers have been consistent now that he has over five hundred thousand people on his lists.
The larger your database, the more money you will earn.
What do you do with Leads after they join your Email List?
Once you convert traffic you don't control into traffic you own, it's crucial to maintain constant, valuable communication with your subscribers. This is where your "TV series" sequences and "Seinfeld, Friends or The Big Bang Theory" style daily emails come into play. These strategies allow you to keep your subscribers engaged and turn them into loyal customers.
Conclusion
Understanding and managing these three types of traffic is critical to the success of your online business. By building and maintaining a solid database of the traffic you have, you can ensure a steady stream of revenue and sustainable growth.
